Building Good Citizenship on the Web

by Matt Weilert

Our target market, the small to mid-size enterprise up to 250 staff per location, is often caught in a bind: small enough to need outside expertise since their business volume won't support a dedicated web staff, yet big enough to recognize what they're missing if they ignore the fundamental shifts that electronic commerce and communications are making in the fabric of society.

Web Services Template
Here at the Rock Eel Café we deal in custom solutions everyday. Here are just two examples how this bouillabaisse of talent and systems thinking techniques could benefit y.o.u.r.Company:

Our web services template has significant error checking to help our potential clients get fast, and accurate web proposal quotes.

  • Targeting the Audience: Of all people, to think that Educators don't like to read was mind-blowing. That was one of many insights uncovered during the strategic site plan session of our client interviews. Our solution was "yellow stickies" for "in your face" information. Just mousing over a link presents additional information to encourage further exploration. We opted to have the yellow layer auto-hide when moving off the link, so there's no on-screen clutter. Persistent notes, with a "close" feature are also available.

  • Risk Reversal/Shifting the Burden: Without these highly educated surfers having to lift a finger, or make a decision, our custom coded browser "sniffer" picks the appropriate javascript library for their browser. We adapted an existing script

    <snip
    function MM_showHideLayers() { var i,p,v,obj,args=MM_showHideLayers.arguments; for (i=0; i<(args.length-2); i+=3)
    snip>
  • to accomodate the introduction of getElementById to the Document Object Model, the "bible" of the web. This change ensures that our, and our clients sites continue to function with layers.
